The JOHN H. AMOS berthed in the River Tees off Dock Point (own negative collection)

My photo of this tug in Middlesbrough Dock on 23 September 1968.

Following the formation of the new Tees and Hartlepools Port Authority in 1967 the JOHN H. AMOS never acquired the new THPA colours and shortly afterwards was withdrawn from service. This view shows her while she was being worked upon by volunteers on behalf of the Middlesbrough Museum Service.

25.12.01: And I am pleased to be able to show two excellent slides taken by the late Frank Flintoft of York, now held by Roy Cressey, and first shown on Riversea International.

Middlesbrough Dock - 26 May 1968

River Tees - 29 June 1969

Ere long, however, she was to be found languishing upriver at Stockton Quay, closed to commercial trade in September 1967.

It was to be several more years before there was any activity concerning her (him?).

On 4 March 1976 repainted and renamed HERO she sailed from Stockton (this probably still classes as the "last" sailing from that historic port) towed by the CERVIA, also owned by ITL. The next two views are photos I took on that occasion.

John Funge caught her down at Chatham on the Medway.

Yet more languishment lay ahead and by November 1977 she was still lying at Chatham, still named HERO, but back to her original TCC colour scheme.

Today, albeit restored to her old name and colours she still lies forlornly on the Medway. Although listed as one of Britain's historic ships, the future would appear bleak?

Mike sent me this nice shot of her in Tees Dock, probably in the early 1960s while the dock was being constructed.
