WHIMBREL II

3.5.01: From Neil Mearns:
I thought to might be interested in the attached photo. of the Steam Launch, WHIMBREL II.

It appeared in "The Engineer" on 9th August, 1901 and seems to be a publicity picture taken on behalf of her builders, Simpson, Strickland & Co., Ltd., Dartmouth, Engineers, who completed her the previous year.

The picture is a only a photocopy but I hope, in due course, to obtain a decent photographic reproduction from a proof of the magazine. I will send you a scanned copy when I have this.

This photo provided by Neil Mearns shows the PATROL (or T.I.C. PATROL), ex Whimbrel II, while in service for the Tyne Improvement Commissioners. Photo taken at South Shields in 1910.

You will find Neil's site about SENTINELS OF THE WEAR (Sunderland's River Police and Fireboats)

Neil is currently working on a similar project concerning the River Tyne, which is where the PATROL fits into the story.
